Celebrate California's First Coastal Beacon At The Crescent City Lighthouse

In operation since 1856, the Battery Point Lighthouse (formerly the Crescent City Light Station) was the first of its kind on the West Coast. Originally lit with oil lamps and tended by a resident keeper, today the lighthouse is completely automated and features an electric Fresnel Lens with 20,000 candle power. Modern day caretakers continue to live on-site, offering guided tours and working on the lighthouse grounds. The Del Norte County Historical Society now maintains the lighthouse and offers guided public tours. Visitors can climb into the light tower, take a look at the living quarters of former keepers and see the historical furniture and artifacts they have left behind since the lighthouse opened more than 150 years ago.

FAQs

  • What Can I Do At Front Street Park?

After your visit to the lighthouse, you can enjoy plenty of outdoor fun at Front Street Park. Enjoy a picnic or barbecue on the grassy lawn areas. Take in the ocean views and enjoy watching the beautiful sunsets. Play on the playground or splash in the water and dig in the sand on the beach. Front Street Park hosts many of the city's annual events, including car shows, food and music festivals and a 4th of July fireworks display.
  • Is there a museum for the lighthouse?

Yes, the Lighthouse Museum displays an exhibit of interesting maritime artifacts, photographs and documents that chronicle its history. The Main Museum, located downtown, is home to a large collection of artifacts from the local Tolowa and Yurok tribes, including one of the finest Native American basket collections in the state. Visitors can also see musical instruments, antique cameras, needlework, logging and mining equipment, clothing, furniture, and a Fresnel Lens from the Saint George Reef Lighthouse. Visit the museum website for more details.
