History of Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park -
Established in 1929, Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park was named in honor of Jedediah Smith, the famed explorer who traveled through Utah, Nevada, Arizona, and California and discovered the westward pass through the Sierra Nevada Mountains.Once home to the Tolowa people, the area now encompassed by the park offered explorers and trappers a virtually untapped resource and eventually drew settlers from the east to share in the riches of the land, forests and rivers. In 1929 the Save-the-Redwoods-League established the park in order to preserve the redwood groves and wildlife for generations to enjoy.
